From Dylan to designer drugs! - Worner Research Lecture traces advances in pharmaceutical drugs since the 1950s
'From Dylan to Designer Drugs: what would Grannie think of her tablets now?’
That’s the title of this year’s La Trobe University annual Worner Research Lecture at the Bendigo campus on Thursday 24th August, 2006.
Head of the School of Pharmacy and Applied Science, Professor Kenn Raymond, will present this free public lecture which will take the audience on a ‘journey of discovery’.
In the lecture, Professor Raymond will trace the significant advances in medicines that have drastically changed our quality of life over the past five decades.
Professor Raymond will examine the emergence of complex drugs which are being used to treat existing epidemics of diabetes and heart disease, as well as new anti-viral and gene/genetic therapy.
Professor Raymond will also discuss where drug research may be in 40 years time, including food for thought on human cloning.
Professor Raymond is an acknowledged leader in his field. He was awarded the inaugural Pharmaceutical Society of Australia Award for Service to Education and consulted to the World Health Organisation (WHO). His current research into more effective treatment of the liver disease Cholestasis, with Dr Jiezhong Chen, was recently published in the prestigious medical journal, The Lancet.
The Worner Research Lecture will be conducted in the McKay Lecture Theatre at the Bendigo campus of La Trobe University (Edwards Road) on Thursday 24th August, 2006 commencing at 5.45pm. All are welcome to attend.
