Launch of 'Reflected Light - La Trobe Essays'

La Trobe University has established a unique reputation in Australia for the grace of its writers and for its contribution to public debate. 'Reflected Light - La Trobe Essays', edited by Peter Beilharz and Robert Manne and published by Black Inc. , collects reflections, evocations, commentary, criticism and humour by leading writers with a connection to La Trobe.

The contributors to this collection read like a who’s who of Australia’s public intellectuals, writers and thinkers – included here is work by Inga Clendinnen, John Carroll, John Hirst, Robert Manne, Marilyn Lake, Stefano Di Pieri, Peter Beilharz, Dennis Altman, Judith Brett and many more.

Carefully sequenced and highly readable, these essays throw reflected light on the past and future, on locality and the wider world. They range from Inga Clendinnen on the perils of technology, John Caroll on why Australia is the lucky country, Stefano de Pieri on life on a slow river, Judith Brett on the chook in the Australian unconscious, Dennis Altman on Gore Vidal and Robert Manne on Howard's love affair with America. 'Reflected Light' is a collection that showcases not only some of the best of La Trobe University but also some of the best thinkers and contributors to Australian culture generally.
