Former Prime Minister of New Zealand to deliver Bendigo’s Sir John Quick Lecture
Former Prime Minister of New Zealand and former Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, the Rt. Hon. Mike Moore, will present this year's Sir John Quick Lecture at La Trobe University’s Bendigo campus.
The free La Trobe University community lecture – 'Globalisation, the World Trade Organisation, a World without Walls’ – is being in held in conjunction with the Sir John Quick Committee and the Bendigo Chamber of Commerce and Industries.
It will be held on Tuesday, May 30 at 5.45pm in the McKay Lecture Theatre, La Trobe University’s Bendigo campus.
Adjunct Professor in La Trobe University’s Faculty of Law and Management, Mike Moore will reflect on the last 50 years and the significant rise in living standards in an historical sense.
He will look at economies which produce the best results – those that embrace democracy, clean governance, open trade, independent courts, property rights, an active civil society and a free media. He says these successes have been underpinned by a global rules-based trading system, the World Trade Organisation.
Professor Moore will also discuss the new Doha Trade round which he says offers the opportunity for the most profound shift of wealth in history - an agriculture deal which alone would give Africa four times more per annum than all the overseas aid put together.
Professor Moore’s view is that all sides win when trade is open and fairly contracted. Modern globalisation spreads wealth, information and liberty, and enhances social and environmental outcomes.
He will also address the question of why some countries in the West are losing their nerve at a time of considerable achievement, and he asks whether this reflects poorly on global political leadership.
