Vietnamese educationist honoured for forging study links abroad

La Trobe University has awarded the degree Doctor of Education (honoris causa) to Professor Nguyen Xuan Vang, Rector and President of Hanoi University of Foreign Studies in Vietnam.

The award recognises his outstanding contribution to English language education in Vietnam and the development of international ties between the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and Australia – particularly with La Trobe University.

Professor Vang has worked closely with the La Trobe University Faculty of Law and Management to develop a successful MBA program, and more recently the Bachelor of Business and Diploma of Business Administration.

The seniority and quality of students in these programs has been most impressive, says La Trobe Dean of Law and Management, Professor Raymond Harbridge, and the program has been assured by the Australian University Quality Agency.

Professor Vang holds degrees in Applied Linguistics and English Studies from universities in Hanoi and a Master of Arts (TESOL) from the University of Canberra.

His international awards include honours from the President of the Republic of Italy and the President of the International Olympic Committee and he has been awarded three times the Outstanding University Leadership of the Year Award by Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training. He also holds Honorary Professorships at Guangxi Normal University and Anhui University in China.

Professor Vang is Editor of the Vietnam 'National Journal of Language and Life', a monthly linguistics journal dealing with practical linguistics research, foreign language teaching and Vietnamese language studies.

He has been Deputy Chair of Vietnam’s National Foreign Language Curriculum Committee, Ministry of Education and Training, and is Director of English Training for Officials of the National Assembly, Supreme People’s Court and Supreme People’s Procuracy.
