'Extraordinary Elements' - an art exhibition by La Trobe Lifeskills

'Extraordinary Elements', an art exhibition by participants of La Trobe Lifeskills, will be held at the La Trobe University Art Museum, Glenn College, main Melbourne campus at Bundoora.

La Trobe Lifeskills provides innovative and creative programs for people with disabilities to help them develop and maximise independent living skills. It offers them educational, artistic and sporting activities, both on the campus and in the community.

The exhibition – from Tuesday 20 to Thursday 29 September – will be opened on Thursday 22 September at 5.30 pm by Jacky Healy, Director of the Bundoora Homestead Art Centre.

Sue Begg, co-ordinator of art at La Trobe Lifeskills, says the theme for the exhibition emerged from a collaborative process between program participants and staff that began at the start of the year.

She says: ‘The title "Extraordinary Elements" was chosen, its incongruity accepted as part of artistic license. It gave great scope for interpretation. The artists have enjoyed supporting their choice of subject matter, sometimes seriously and often with a sense of fun.

‘From the elements of air, water, fire, and earth have come trees and foliage, aeroplanes and birds, dinosaurs and fish, houses and people. Some works are abstract, others based in reality. Each piece represents an individual idea about basic elements of life that we all enjoy.’

The La Trobe University Art Museum is open on Tuesday to Friday, from 12 noon to 4 pm or by appointment.
