PETRO GEORGIOU TO SPEAK AT LA TROBE UNIVERSITY

Mr Petro Georgiou, MHR for Kooyong and a leading figure in the recent campaign to liberalize detention regulations for asylum-seekers, will speak at La Trobe University on 20 September.

Mr Georgiou will give the 10th La Trobe Politics Society Annual Lecture at 6:15 p.m. in the Council Chamber of the John Scott Meeting House. His lecture will be on Human Rights in a Global Era.

‘We are delighted that Mr. Georgiou has accepted our invitation,’ said Leighton Vivian, Politics Society convener.

‘Jeff Kennett gave the first Annual Lecture in 1996, and since then we have had an impressive line-up of international and local speakers, including two leaders of the Federal opposition and outstanding Indian and Malaysian social scientists. Mr. Georgiou will continue this tradition.’

Mr Vivian said that after his recent attempts to reform aspects of the Immigration Act, Mr. Georgiou had been the subject of scathing attacks from colleagues and had received support from some unlikely quarters. ‘It promises to be a thought provoking evening.’

Mr. Georgiou taught in Politics at La Trobe University from 1970 to 1973. He was a senior adviser to Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, was an architect of SBS and Victorian state director of the Liberal Party from 1989-94.

The admission fee of $5 ($3 for Politics Society members) includes tea, coffee and refreshments prior to the lecture from 5:45 pm.
