CANCER RESEARCHER TO SPEAK AT LA TROBE UNIVERSITY

One of Australia’s leading cancer researchers, Professor Suzanne Cory, will give the Nancy Millis Lecture at La Trobe University on Monday 14 March, 2005.

The free public lecture will start at 5.30 pm in the West Lecture Theatre 2 of the Health Sciences Complex at La Trobe’s main Melbourne campus at Bundoora. The title of Professor Cory’s lecture is ‘Searching for the Achilles Heel of Cancer’.

Professor Cory is Director of The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Joint Head of the Molecular Genetics of Cancer Division at the Institute, and Professor of Medical Biology at The University of Melbourne.

Professor Cory’s research has had a major impact on the understanding of immunology and the development of cancer. After pioneering PhD studies determining the sequence of transfer RNA, her post-doctoral studies at the University of Geneva focussed on sequence analysis of a model messenger RNA.

In 1971, with her husband, Dr Jerry Adams, also a prominent cancer researcher, she returned to The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, where they helped to introduce gene cloning technology in Australia.

In 1981, their attention turned to the nature of the genetic accidents that cause cancer and more lately their current focus is how cells decide whether to live or die.

The Nancy Millis Lecture is held annually by the La Trobe University Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering and focuses on existing and emerging research of significant community value. Emeritus Professor Nancy Millis, a world renowned microbiologist, is Chancellor of La Trobe University.
