MUSIC, FOOD AND HISTORY IN LA TROBE TOUR OF MEXICO/CUBA
Taste culinary fusion in Mexico with a dish called! Mole Poblano which combines Aztec and Hispanic cuisines by smothering roast turkey with rich spicy dark chocolate sauce.
Hear musical evolution in Havana where Cuba’s exhilarating rhythms combine the sounds of the island's indigenous, European and African past.
See historical evidence of past political systems in archaeological sites of the Maya, vanquished 1000 years ago, and of the Aztecs, squashed by Spaniards 500 years later.
These are among the exotic delights to be savoured on a 22-day tour of Mexico and Cuba from 27 January to 17 February 2006.
La Trobe University’s Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS) – Australia’s first academic centre dedicated to the study of Central America, and Australians Studying Abroad (ASA) – Australia’s leading educational travel operator, offer the trip.
Led by ILAS historians Dr Barry Carr and Dr Ralph Newmark, the tour is evenly split between Mexico and Cuba. As well as the pleasures of popular culture like food, music, arts and crafts, the tour examines ancient, colonial and modern history.
In Mexico as well as visits to Aztec and Mayan archaeological sites, it will also take in museums and galleries. The works of Frida Kahlo and the murals of Diego Rivera are highlights. In Cuba there are visits to Old Havana and sites important to Cuba’s twentieth century Castro revolution.
The price of the land content is $5900 for bookings made before 30 September 2005. La Trobe Alumni members receive a $150 discount.
