Does Australia have a Religious Right?

Does Australia have a religious right and what is the role of religion in our politics?

These will be among the questions debated at a public meeting of the La Trobe University Politics Society on Monday 18 April.

Among those participating will be Dr Marion Maddox of Victoria University, Wellington. Dr Maddox is the author of 'God under Howard: the rise of the religious right in Australian politics' (Allen & Unwin, 2005) which sees ‘the growing influence of the religious right on John Howard and his government’.

Also involved will be Senator-elect Steve Fielding, newly elected Family First Senator from Victoria and Mr Brian Howe, an ordained minister of religion, a cabinet minister in the Hawke and Keating governments 1984-96 and deputy leader of the parliamentary Labor Party 1991-5.

Meeting Chair will be Judith Brett, Professor of Politics, La Trobe University, author of a number of political works including The Australian Liberals and the Moral Middle Class.

The forum will start at 5:15 p.m. in the Martin Building, Room 362, at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus. (Car park 7, Melways Ref. G-5, Map 573)
