La Trobe ranked in top 100 international universities - and gains 23rd place in the arts and humanities

La Trobe University has been ranked 98th among the world’s top universities in the latest British 'Times Higher Education Supplement' league table – a strong increase from its number 142 position last year. Among Australian universities it was ranked 11th, up from 14th place last year.

In the Arts and Humanities, La Trobe won a place in the top 25 international universities - ranking at no 23.

La Trobe University Arts and Humanities was ranked equal 3rd in Australia (with Monash University), after the University of Melbourne and the Australian National University (who were ranked 8 and 10 respectively) in the world table.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Osborne, said: ‘Naturally, I am delighted that the high international standing of the University has been recognized in this independent review.’

‘The excellent rankings for Arts and Humanities and for Social Sciences are particularly striking, reflecting the enormous depth of talent in these fields in the University.

‘The strong showing in Medical Science is a further indication of the strength of the La Trobe case for the development of a Regional Medical Faculty.’

La Trobe University Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Roger Wales, commenting on his area’s success, said:

‘This is extremely encouraging recognition of the outstanding range of scholars and students in this Faculty. It is particularly encouraging to see us so highly ranked in international comparisons, and bracketed with colleagues at Melbourne, ANU and Monash as among the best in the world.’

La Trobe University rankings in other disciplinary areas were:

La Trobe Social Sciences ranked 68 internationally – and 9th in Australia (after Melbourne 11, ANU 15, Monash 17, Sydney 19, UNSW 24, Queensland 25, RMIT 37 and Macquarie 46).

In Biomedicine, La Trobe ranked 86 in the world – and 9th in Australia (after Melbourne 10, Sydney 18, ANU 21, Monash 28, Queensland 29, UNSW 41, QUT 47 and Macquarie 53).
