MEDIA EXPERT TO DISCUSS CURRENT AFFAIRS PROGRAMS

Well known commentator on Australian news media, Professor Graeme Turner, will give a lecture on Australian television current affairs programs at La Trobe University on Thursday 3 November.

His lecture is entitled ‘Ending the Affair: some reflections on the past, present and possible futures of television current affairs in Australia'.

Graeme Turner is Professor of Cultural Studies and Director of the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies at the University of Queensland.

The lecture - sponsored by La Trobe’s Communication, Arts & Critical Enquiry and Media Studies Program - will be held at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) at La Trobe’s Melbourne (Bundoora) campus at 11.30 am.

Dr Turner will discuss his recently published research on Australian television news and current affairs Ending the Affair: the decline of television current affairs in Australia (UNSW Press).

He is one of the founding figures of media and cultural studies in Australia and internationally. He has published on film, television, literature, radio and Australian popular culture and is currently working on a study of talkback radio.

His latest publication Ending the Affair consolidates over 10 years of research. It offers a rare insight into the history of Australian television current affairs and why it has declined over the last decades.

From early programs such as ‘This Day Tonight’ to more contemporary versions like ‘A Current Affair’, Professor Turner examines the industrial and regulatory conditions in which Australian TV current affairs are produced and consumed.
