Law students travel to Prague for international course

Law students in Pargue

Law students in PargueLaw Students Julia Gibby and Sarah Nicholson participated in the Crime, Law & Psychology (CLP) international course. They were two of four Australian’s in the company of 30 students from across the globe.

The CLP program offers students with a demonstrated interest in the interrelatedness of crime, law and psychology the opportunity to apply to participate in the CLP program held at the Centre of Public Policy, Prague.  The purpose of the program is to enable students to gain knowledge about the application of psychological knowledge to criminal law; network and discuss areas of interests with UK’s best universities; gain a new perspective on the role of psychology in various criminal justice systems; and to experience one of the most impressive cultural and historical capitals of Central Europe.

Based on their written submissions, academic merit and practical experience, Julia and Sarah were offered places in this competitive program. ‘The calibre of students was impressively high in 2009. Most students had completed their degrees, or were in their penultimate year. There were also a number that were at Masters and PhD level. Students came from all across the globe, including USA, Scotland, London, Sweden, India, Greece, The Netherlands and Spain’.

The course was divided into three sections each taught by leaders in the field of psychology and criminology including Prof. Amina Memon, Professor of Psychology at University of Aberdeen; Andrew Roberts, Senior Lecturer at University of Warwick and Dr Melanie Takarangi, Lecturer at University of Leicester.

When they were not studying, the students travelled the city experiencing the day and night life.

‘Prague is an amazing place not only to study, but to visit, you cannot help but be a typical ‘tourist’ and stop to take pictures on every corner. The historic city is filled with gothic architecture, statues of fallen heroes and some of the world’s oldest wonders. We were extremely lucky to experience life in such an amazing city and it is an opportunity that we would highly recommend.
