With the theme 'Youth and Intercultural Insight,' the inaugural Australia-China Student forum started at La Trobe in early October 2011. Developed based on the great success of the Student Cross Cultural Program this reciprocal program is co-organised by the Centre for China Studies and the Division of Residential Services of La Trobe University and the Office of International Relations of Peking University, one of the most prestigious universities in China.

Both of the host universities provide scholarships for the participants to cover their local costs and La Trobe University even further subsidise international airfare and provide free pre-departure Chinese language classes.

This year there are 20 student participants from Peking University and 21 from La Trobe. For each group, the trip involves two weeks as hosts and two weeks as visitors to the respective university where trips are taken, seminars are attended and a student forum and student dialogue run, all aiming to help the students of the two universities to foster an international outlook and increase their understanding and appreciation of the respective culture's history, customs and differentiating features.

A welcome lunch 3 October for the participants of the program was hosted by Professor Tim Brown, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research).

'This program is very important for the University. It broadens our students' views and provides an opportunity for students to exchange ideas and communicate with students from another country', said Professor Brown.

La Trobe students will embark their trip to China at the end of November to expand their understanding on Classical Chinese Culture and the teachings of Confucius, as well as exploring the great city with their newfound friends.
