Social robot supports young adult with autism

The Department of Family and Community Services has funded RECCSI to deploy a socially assistive robot (Charlie) to support a young adult with autism in Tamworth, NSW.

The social robot, Charlie, is based in the participant’s home and will interact and deliver lifestyle-centered services aimed at improving the young adult’s emotional wellbeing during a six month trial.

The social robot’s services are expected to engage, enable and empower the young adult by:

  • providing positive emotional engagement through sensory enrichment services (e.g., singing and dancing to a variety of reading news
  • enhancing learning experiences by offering interactive and emotionally engaging storytelling
  • improving the participant’s cognitive ability through memory games and quizzes
  • improving social connectivity with relatives and friends.
