Multi-sport Neaves plays National Sevens

La Trobe Elite Athlete Rebecca Neaves has represented the National Universities Women’s Rugby 7s team at the Australian Rugby Union National Sevens Championship in Adelaide over the weekend.

The ARU National Sevens Championship is seen as the highest domestic Rugby 7s competition and is the main source of selection for the Australian Rugby 7s squads.

The National Universities’ team performed admirably throughout the tournament, defeating the Northern Territory 29-0 in the women’s Bowl Final.

Neaves impressed the coach and manager with her commitment and skill after flying to Sydney specifically for the selection trials in October.

The 19 year old Blackrock resident capped off a fantastic month with her Rugby 7s selection, after being signed as a free agent by the Western Bulldogs for the upcoming AFLW competition.

Neaves switched her focus from Rugby to AFL at the end of 2015 after deciding to pursue opportunities in Australian Rules following the announcement of a new national competition.

Her selection to the National Universities Rugby 7s team shows that Bec is a promising talent across multiple codes.

“I was pretty stoked to be invited to the tournament,” said Neaves.  It’s a great opportunity that enables me to further develop my rugby skills.”

Bec is set to receive financial support from the La Trobe Elite Athlete Support Fund (EASF) to cover costs associated with the tournament.

“Just knowing LEAP is there if I need help with anything is great,” Neaves said.  “The program enables student athletes to better their sporting careers and focus on an education.”

The EASF was established through a growing contribution from the La Trobe Elite Athlete Program's supporters to provide financial assistance to elite student athletes in pursuit of their sporting endeavours.

Bec now shifts her attention to developing her skills in AFL as the Western Bulldogs first pre-season draws near.

“I really want to take the opportunity at the Bulldogs to gain all the knowledge I can and work hard towards becoming the best player I can be.”
