La Trobe Asia is pleased to welcome Professor John Makeham as the Director of La Trobe University's new China Studies Research Centre.
Professor Makeham brings substantial international and national experience to the role, most recently at the Australian National University, where he served in a number of roles, including terms as head of the Department of Chinese Studies and also head of the Department of Philosophy and Religion in the School of Culture, History and Language. He is widely regarded as an expert in the areas of Chinese philosophy and intellectual history.
"I very much look forward to continuing to meet as many colleagues as I can, and to explain the goals of the new China Studies Research Centre." says Professor Makeham. "One of the first messages I am emphasizing is that the Research Centre seeks to promote research related to China across all parts of the University."
The establishment of the China Studies Research Centre under the direction Professor Makeham was one of the key aims of the La Trobe University China Strategy.
The China Studies Research Centre will:
- Identify and harness existing China-related research strengths
- Expand the pool of China Studies researchers with grant-competitive track records
- Work collaboratively with the University's Research Focus Areas (RFAs)
- Achieve a critical mass of China expertise as soon as practical
"John is a wonderful addition to China scholarship at La Trobe," says Professor Nick Bisley, Executive Director of La Trobe Asia. "He is the world’s leading thinker on the Chinese intellectual history and demonstrates the real commitment La Trobe has to invest in the very best Asia focused academic expertise."
