PSA Insurance scholarships support rural dentistry

A new, full scholarship has been established to support talented students with the cost of their dental studies for up to five years at La Trobe University's Bendigo campus.

The PSA Insurance Scholarship Program in Dentistry for Rural Victoria will support students in Bendigo's Bachelor of Health Sciences Dentistry/Master of Dentistry program.

For students who need to move to Bendigo for the course, the scholarship will cover campus accommodation, as well as educational costs like clinical placements, instruments, text books, uniforms and entry requirement fees.

The high demand for health care in the underserviced rural areas of Victoria is a pressing issue, particularly for those from low socio-economic groups who are the most likely to have limited access to care..

La Trobe University established its dental program in Bendigo in 2008, following research showing that graduates from regional Victoria tend to remain in that area for work, and dental care is one of the significantly under-resourced health issues in the region

The new scholarship from PSA Insurance, which supports projects that benefit the dental profession, has been warmly welcomed by the university.

"This fantastic scholarship contributes to our ongoing mission to 'train and retain' dentists in rural and regional areas where needs are greatest," says Professor Mark Gussy, Head of Dentistry and Oral Health.

The inaugural scholarship will be awarded for the start of the 2016 academic year.
