La Trobe Nano Tech 2008 Japan Visit

A group of La Trobe University nanotechnology students attended the Nano Tech 2008 Exhibition and Conference in Tokyo Japan in February 2008. It is one of the biggest events of its type with around 800 exhibitors and 50,000 members of the general public visiting over three days.

Associate Professor Paul Pigram, convenor of the La Trobe Nanotechnology Program, recently took a group of nine students and two high school teachers to the Nano Tech 2008 Exhibition in Tokyo Japan. This is the biggest nanotechnology exhibition in the world.
‘It’s housed in an exhibition centre on Tokyo Bay that dwarfs anything we have in Australia,’ Associate Professor Pigram said. ‘What you see when you go into the exhibition hall are the major international companies highlighting the latest manufacturing equipment, the best analytical instruments, and the newest products in the nanotechnology space.’

As a researcher in the area, he says his preconceptions were strongly challenged by the visit while students were motivated by the opportunities they observed for working and studying on a world stage. ‘Nanotechnology is very new,’ says Associate Professor Pigram. ‘It is a new way of thinking about the intersection between physics, chemistry and biology.’

The group travelled as a part of the Australian delegation to Nano Tech 2008, organised by the Australian Nano Business Forum:
