About the program

Our Industry Cadetship Program enables experienced students to undertake industry placements aligned to their undergraduate studies.

Program structure

Cadetships are structured to complement our students' existing coursework. Placements typically occur during the end-of-year summer holiday (12 weeks). However, our program is flexible and can be structured to suit the circumstances and needs of most industry partners.

Program cost

Students receive a negotiated stipend, or scholarship, for the duration of the cadetship. The cost to industry partners is tax-deductable.  La Trobe University also charges industry partners a small program administration fee.

The College administers each student's scholarship payment and invoices the industry partner. PAYG tax is not payable by the industry partner and there is no requirement to provide the student with a Payment Summary at the end of a financial year.

To ensure that cadetship applicants meet our industry partners' need we only recruit students from the most appropriate courses, disciplines and campuses. Our partners then choose the strongest applicants for interview and subsequent appointment.

The Cadetship Team can assist with the recruitment process by helping to refine roles and responsibilities, manage applications and coordinate interviews and selection.

Current cadetship students study at our Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo and Melbourne (Bundoora) campuses and are typically in the final years of their course.

Industry disciplines

Candidates are available from a range of scientific disciplines including:

  • engineering, covering a range of specialisations: telecommunications, microelectronics, biomedical, network engineering, software engineering and systems engineering
  • science: biology, chemistry, physics, nanotechnology, medical science, psychology, mathematics, statistics, agricultural sciences, environmental science, biotechnology, conservation and ecology.

Program support

The Industry Cadetship Office monitors all placements. The Office maintains contact with partnering organisations leading up to, during and after each placement. We can visit the workplace during placements to speak to students and supervisors to ensure satisfaction; and seek feedback at the end of placements to evaluate and improve our program.
