How much are students paid?
The Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering operates a cadet scholarship program. Under this scheme the student receives a tax-free scholarship while on a cadetship. The scholarship varies according to the length of the cadetship.
When are the cadetships available?
Cadetships are offered during vacation periods or for a full calendar year under the Year-in-Industry program. Vacation placements occur at both mid year (winter cadetship) and end of year (Summer cadetship).
How long are cadetships?
Cadetships vary in length according to the vacation period. Summer cadetships are up to 12 weeks. Winter cadetships are 3 weeks but often the student returns to the organisation over the following summer. Year-in-Industry Cadetships are, as the name suggests, a 48 week placement.
What courses have cadetships?
Cadetships are available to students enrolled in any Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering degree. This includes students from Bundoora, Albury/Wodonga, Mildura and Bendigo.
What types of activities will a student experience in the work place?
Appropriate activities will vary according to the degree you are studying. The rule of thumb is that the experiences offered by the work place need to reflect the course you are studying.
Are cadetships full time?
Cadetships are usually full time.
In what year of my degree can I start a cadetship?
Usually cadetships are commenced in the second last year of your degree. However, in some specialised cases where multiple placements are required students can get involved in the first year of their course. For example, students studying viticultural science are required to work in three climatic regions and in order to complete this series of placements it is common for cadetships to commence in first year. Some engineering cadetships provide an opportunity for a series of cadetships over successive summers. In this case students need to commence in first year in order to complete the program before graduation.
Can I return to the company a second time?
Cadetships can be structured so that a student does 2-3 summer cadetships followed by a Year-in-Industry. Alternatively a series of summer cadetships can be arranged to provide an opportunity for the student to continue to gain exposure to the work place as they progress through their studies.
How many cadets can be placed with one organisation?
Organisations are able to offer multiple cadetships. It is common for a large organisation to take a number of students sometimes within the one discipline or across a range of disciplines.
How are the students chosen?
Cadetships are competitive. The application process is similar to looking for full time employment. Workshops provide you with instructions on how to prepare an application. Host organisations take an active role in selection.
What documentation will I need to sign before commencing a cadetship?
All cadets are required to sign a Cadetship Acceptance Form and a Scholarship advice form. This documentation will be provided by the Industry Cadetship Office.
Are the cadetships part of my degree?
All students undertaking a cadetship will be enrolled in the relevant cadetship subjects. All cadetship subjects will appear on your academic transcript.
What types of businesses participate in the program?
Any business that has employment opportunities in science, computing or engineering are welcome to join the program. Organisations can be private or government, large or small.
Are cadetships located in regional areas or interstate?
Cadetships are located across regional Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia. Many cadetships are located within Melbourne’s suburbs.
How is the program monitored?
The Industry Cadetship Office monitors all cadetships and keeps in contact with all host organisations before, during and after the placement. Staff also visit the work place during each cadetship and talk with both the student and their supervisor.
Is a cadetship a subject?
Students undertaking a cadetship are enrolled in a cadetship subject.
How does La Trobe University recognise the cadetship program?
Students receive a certificate at the completion of their cadetship. All cadetship subjects are recorded on the student’s academic record.
Do the students need to complete any university work while on a cadetship?
The main aim of the cadetship is to gain an understanding of the workplace and experience what it is like to work in a field related to your La Trobe University studies. As a result the focus is on the work place but a short report is required at the completion of the placement.
