Occupational Health & SafetySchool of Molecular SciencesThe OH&S page provides information for all members of the School about identifying hazardous situations and what to do about them. Hazards are identified when we complete a risk assessment for a procedure. Potential hazards are recorded in our hazard register which directs you to a safe work procedure where appropriate. Risk assessments should be completed for the use of any potentially hazardous substances (risk assessment for hazardous substances) or for the use of any potentially hazardous equipment. Please keep checking the hazard register for updates as many procedures are already assessed and are listed there. You can also find useful information on potential hazards and safe work practices in the La Trobe University Occupational Health and Safety Manual, the Chemwatch database and Workcover (includes WorkSafe). This short student induction describes La Trobe University Health and Safety Systems and explains students' responsibilities whilst studying at our University. Workplace safety is also monitored by quarterly lab Inspections. Training of students and staff is continually updated and monitored with training checklists. More information about Recombinant DNA Research. As part of our compliance with Drugs and Poisons we need to ensure that substances / preparations are caught up in the everyday processes of ordering materials that require lock and key / recording processes are required for such materials once they’ve arrived. Currently labs have their lists of materials that require recording and locking, however it is when new materials to the system are ordered that it will be particularly important to refer to the entire 368 page Standard-Poisons-LAW-2010 to which we should refer when a material is placed for order. The most important schedules that we need to be concerned with are Schedules 4, 7, 8 and 9. If you do a Control ‘F” (Find) in the PDF and you find that the material is in Schedule 7, 8 or 9 do not place the order, you must speak with the Delegated Resposible Person as we do not have a licence to purchase Schedules 8 and 9 and may NOT have a licence for the 7 material! If you have any queries please contact the Delegated Resposible Person for clarification. Content Approved by: Head of School |
