SCHEDULED POISONS

Use
Poisons used in a variety of laboratory methods.

Hazards
Class 6 – Toxic.

Risk Control Measures: Restricted Access
Scheduled poisons are to be locked up. Staff in Room 356 will allow access to the locked cabinet, and must sign their approval for the use of the chemical. The worker requiring access to the poison must provide adequate reasons for gaining access to the scheduled poisons, and must record the amount of chemical being used in the ‘Register of Scheduled Poison Use’. The Register must be filled out for all transactions and should include:

  • Date

  • User’s name

  • Type of scheduled poison

  • Amount taken

  • Intended purpose

  • Signature of user

  • Signature of registered person

Risk Control Measures

  • Read the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the chemical before you use it.

  • Wear gloves and face mask when weighing toxic chemicals.

Engineering / Ventilation Controls

Ensure access to an eyewash facility in areas where scheduled poisons are used. Use engineering controls such as a fume hood or weighing hood to reduce airborne concentrations to as low as reasonably achievable.

Storage Requirements

Store in a locked cupboard in Biochem. store, separate from corrosives and oxidisers.

First Aid / Spill Control Procedures
Refer to the MSDS for the scheduled poison for specific first aid and spill procedures.
Wash off immediately with copious amounts of cold water (at least 10 minutes). In case of contact with eyes, immediately flush eyes with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes (eyewash).
Seek medical attention. Poisons Information Centre (0 13 1126).

Large Spill
:
Notify others in the area of spill. Evacuate area. Call the Molecular Sciences General Office (9479 2160) or Zisis Pouros (9479 1294) for cleanup. Barricade area with tape to prevent entry until arrival of response personnel. Provide assistance and information to spill response team.

Waste
Check the MSDS for the appropriate waste storage and disposal procedures.
Contact the Molecular Sciences General Office (9479 2160) for current waste disposal instructions.
