BASES
Use
Mixing various concentrations of aqueous base solutions. Handling of
strong bases.
Hazards
Class 8 — Corrosives. Bases — ammonia solution, sodium hydroxide
(pellets and solutions), potassium hydroxide. Risk of burns to skin and
eyes.
Risk Control Measures
Always add concentrated base to water to dilute — never add water to
base. Only use concentrated bases after receiving safety training
(Laboratory Induction & Authorisation). Avoid skin contact, serious
burns may result. Gloves made of nitrile, neoprene, or PVC can provide
effective skin protection. Wear safety glasses or chemical safety
goggles with face shield when using large quantities, or chemical safety
goggles when using small quantities. Wear rubber, neoprene, or PVC apron
when using large quantities and splash potential exists.
Engineering / Ventilation Controls
Use concentrated bases in fume hood. An eyewash facility must be
available and accessible when working with corrosive liquids.
Storage Requirements
Store bases together, separate from oxidizing agents and organic
materials.
First Aid / Spill Control Procedures
Skin exposure:
Rinse affected skin with plenty of water and remove contaminated
clothing and shoes. Rinse for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical
attention.
Eye exposure:
Splashes may cause tissue destruction. Wash eyes for at least 15
minutes, lifting the upper and lower eyelids occasionally. Seek medical
attention immediately.
Small spills:
Do not attempt clean up if you feel unsure of your ability to do so or
if you perceive the risk to be greater than normal laboratory
operations. Cover spill with benzoic acid. When reaction stops pick up
with damp sponge or paper towels. Or absorb freestanding liquid using
vermiculite or Polyzorb from Spill Kit. Follow instructions on Spill
Kit.
Large Spills:
Notify others in the area of spill. Evacuate area. Call the Molecular Sciences General Office (9479 2160) or Zisis Pouros (9479 1294) for clean up.
Barricade area with tape to prevent entry until arrival of response
personnel. Provide assistance and information to spill response team.
Waste
Decontamination: Use water.
Contact the Molecular Sciences General Offices (9479 2160) for current waste disposal
instructions.
