Through Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), Mildura business students put the knowledge and skills they learn at university into action through local outreach projects.

SIFE is an organisation of student volunteers with more than 1400 university programs in 48 countries. SIFE challenges students to make a difference in their communities and to develop leadership, teamwork and communication skills through teaching what they learn to others. University teams across Australia present their projects at a national competition and the winners go on to compete internationally. It is a prestigious and highly competitive contest.

Jeremy Seward, Associate Head of the Regional School of Business, coordinates the Mildura SIFE team. Projects designed and implemented by the team have included:

• ‘Matters of the Heart’: students surveyed Mildura shoppers to find the causes of a decline in sales in Mildura’s CBD.
• A project with Indigenous students at Coomealla High School designed to improve financial literacy and business skills through creating, marketing and selling indigenous artefacts.

In 2006 Mildura students won the national Entrepreneurial Award and Stephanie Schneider was elected SIFE student of the year. Amy Nicol was SIFE Australian President in 2007. The success of the Mildura team has led to starting teams on the other La Trobe campuses.
