Department of Microbiology
Postgraduate Research Program

Introduction

Microbiology is by nature a broad discipline, covering a wide range of quite diverse areas. This is reflected in the way it must be taught to be able to present a comprehensive course, and consequently also in the areas of research that are encompassed. Microbiology at the Department of Microbiology at La Trobe University is no exception, and the broad fields of research available in the Department are set out below. Both pure and applied areas of research are represented and available.

Postgraduate research is available to successful applicants at the Department of Microbiology as either Masters of Science (MSc) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). These both require the submission of a thesis reporting the results of original research work carried out under the supervision of the following research staff.

Fields of Research

Dr Christian Barth (Lecturer)

c.barth@latrobe.edu.au

Mitochondrial Genetics:

  1. Transcription and Transcript Processing in Mitochondria
  2. Identification and Characterization of Nuclear-Encoded Mitochondrial Proteins in Dictyostelium, Yeast and Mammals

Dr Naomi Bishop (Lecturer)

n.bishop@latrobe.edu.au

Cell biology and molecular pathogenesis:

  1. Molecular and cellular virology
  2. Cell biology in health and disease
  3. Eukaryotic genomics

Prof. Paul Fisher (Professor/Head of Department)

p.fisher@latrobe.edu.au

Molecular cell biology:

Genetic and molecular studies of signal transduction during development and behaviour in the model eukaryote, Dictyostelium discoideum. Mitochondrial biology and disease using Dictyostelium as a model.

Dr Jason Mackenzie (Senior Lecturer)

j.mackenzie@latrobe.edu.au

Molecular virology:

The mechanism of replication used by two positive-stranded RNA viruses, both highly pathogenic to humans, West Nile virus (a flavivirus) and Mouse Norovirus (a Norovirus).

Dr Vilma Stanisich (Senior Lecturer)

v.stanisich@latrobe.edu.au

Molecular genetics:

Genetic and molecular nature of bacterial plasmids and transposable elements, in particular those from Pseudomonas and from enteric bacteria.
