Human milk and viruses in the news

Headline: Breast milk fear on baby hepatitis

  • Herald-Sun, 15 July, 1996
  • Just because a mother and infant have the same virus infection, this does not mean that the milk is a source of the virus. This requires extensive epidemiological and other studies, e.g. hepatitis B which appears in milk but is not transmitted through the milk

    Headline: Sitter who breastfed
  forced into blood tests

  • The Age, 29 October 1996

  • Headline: Breast milk mix-up scare

  • Herald-Sun, 18 April 1997

As no evidence indicates one feed of milk will transmit viruses, it is most unlikely that any was was transmitted in either of the above cases.
