Undergraduate study in
Microbiology
Introduction
The Department of Microbiology offers subjects at second
and third year levels of La Trobe University's
Bachelor of Science
degree. Subjects in Microbiology may be taken as part of the core requirements for the
following degree courses:
Microbiology can also be taken as an elective for
Bachelor of
Nutritional Science and
Bachelor
of Viticultural Science and Wine Production, as well as many other courses.
A unit is also offered as a first year elective
for students whose degree structures allow them to undertake such
electives eg. degrees in Arts, Public Health or Medical Sciences. Please refer to the
Undergraduate Handbook for more
information about La Trobe University's undergraduate courses.
Students satisfactorily completing the Bachelor of Science course may be offered
placement in the fourth-year level
Bachelor
of Science (Honours) in Microbiology. The Honours course consists of a one year
research project under the supervision of a senior academic, as well as some course
work. A listing of the research areas available for 2006 can
be found on the Department's honours research page.
The topics covered in the subjects are taught by lecturers who actively
research and publish in their specified field, allowing
students to receive up-to-date information. The degree may open many
career paths, or the student may choose higher level
training leading to MSc and PhD.
