1964 La Trobe University
The University was established on part of the former Mont Park farm.
The original University's master plan provided for a biological reserve.
The area selected consisted of weedy pasture with a few scattered ancient Red Gums.
By 1970 fencing and tree planting for a 5 hectare reserve was underway.
By 1977 several parcels of land were added expanding the Reserve to its present 28 hectares.
Restoration of the native vegetation has been tackled systematically.
Wetland systems have been developed, treating stormwater at the head of La Trobe's moat system.
Bird life has returned (almost 140 species annually). Animals such as Kangaroos, snakes, marsupial mice have been released.
Academic research, employment projects and volunteer activities have flourished.
Educational services are provided at primary, secondary and tertiary levels using the facility as a natural resource.
The Gould League has so far transferred two of their existing programs and are actively developing more.
