The History
- Before human settlement volcanic flows bisected the Yarra and Plenty Rivers creating extensive flood plain wetland eco-systems with swampy heavy soils rich
in nutrients.
- Grasslands and River Red Gum Woodlands and associated wetland ecosystems dominated the landscape
The area became the fertile breadbasket for the Wurundjeri clan of the Woiworung tribe.
They called the area Keelbundora 'the grazing land of many kangaroos'.
Animals such as bandicoots, flying possums (sugar gliders), bats, snakes, lizards, native cats (quolls), and a range of marsupials ranging from the kangaroo to
the antechinus flourished in the Red Gum habitat.
