Media Studies ProgramPostgraduate Studies
It is possible to study media and journalism in a wide range of taught courses and research programs. Graduate Diploma in Media StudiesThe program is designed for people who have not studied the media before and who wish to develop an understanding of the media and/or media skills. Students can choose subjects from the video/television, radio/audio or journalism streams as well as subjects which deal with the social political and cultural aspects of the media. This fee-paying course can be completed in two semesters full time. Part time enrolment is possible. See "Career Pathways" for recommended subjects. Graduate Diploma in JournalismThe program is designed for people who have not studied journalism before and who wish to develop an understanding of journalism and/or journalism skills. In addition to journalism subjects, students can choose subjects which deal with the social political and cultural aspects of the media. Graduate Diploma in Humanities & Social SciencesThis Diploma is designed for graduates of any discipline who seek to develop their knowledge of subject areas which they did not cover in their first degree. Students can take undergraduate subjects from the Media Studies Program or other programs within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Six undergraduate coursework subjects are studied full-time over one year to eighteen months, or part-time over two to three years. The Certificate represents one half of the Graduate Diploma and can be competed in one semester full time. Master of Arts (Preliminary)The MA (Prelim) is primarily intended as a pathway to a postgraduate research degree. This course is intended for students who have not completed an Honours year that includes a thesis component. The MA (Prelim) thesis may be written - approximately 12,000 words in length or take the form of a creative production, accompanied by an exegesis (written analysis and interpretation). Master of Arts (Research)Media Studies Program staff represent a wide range of research interests and are available to discuss possible Masters research topics. Doctor of Philosophy Media Studies Program staff represent a wide range of research interests and are available to discuss possible PhD topics.
