Media Studies Program

Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Media Studies

Background
The Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Media Studies is a five-year combined degree providing an accredited professional qualification in law, as well as vocationally oriented media studies chosen from either the journalism, video and audio/radio streams. It is a largely fixed-content program. The workload each year is slightly greater than that required in either single degree to enable students to complete the course in five years. The law course includes compulsory specialised subjects relevant to media studies such as Intellectual Property Law and Competition Policy and Law.

Career Possibilities

The media and information industries are evolving rapidly. They require the services of law graduates who understand how intellectual property, copyright and media regulation relate to the old and new media. Apart from the traditional publishing and broadcasting industries there is a growing awareness of the need to employ graduates with legal, media, communication and journalism skills in many areas of government and industry. While we see the employment prospects in the traditional media industries reducing we believe that employment opportunities are growing in other areas. Our graduates will be suited to entry levels positions in law firms, journalism, public relations, corporate and government communications, broadcasting, media consultancies and the information and entertainment industries.
