Media Studies Program
Bachelor of Arts (Media Studies Major)
Background
The Bachelor of Arts (Media Studies major), is a three year degree program which allows you to combine a study of the media with other subject areas offered within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Popular combinations include Cinema Studies, English, Politics, and Drama.
Career possibilities
The Media Studies major is not designed to provide professional training in writing and production although a limited number of television and radio courses can be included. The course provides a general introduction to the media and can be useful if you wish to seek employment in the media and media-related industries. It is accepted by the Ministry of Education as a teaching subject for those planning to become secondary school teachers.
Honours and postgraduate study
A fourth, Honours year is available and successful completion of the Honours program can lead to either a Masters by Research, a Masters by Coursework or a PhD. The Honours year involves a traditional written thesis or a combination of a creative work and an accompanying written thesis. A creative thesis can be useful in building a portfolio of work to show prospective employers.
