| At MCHR we have a diverse group of postgraduate students with backgrounds in general practice, midwifery, community health, maternal and child health, social work and women's health. The postgraduate group meets monthly throughout the year to discuss aspects of their research and relevant methodological issues. This course includes a mix of lectures and practical sessions on critical appraisal and problem solving and aims to provide participants with an appreciation of the principles of epidemiological methods and research in the areas of: fertility, infertility and early pregnancy; preterm birth, fetal growth; perinatal outcomes; maternal mortality and morbidity; birth and intervention; birth defects and malformations; multiple births; and women's views of care. Held mid-year at the Kathleen Syme Education Centre at the Royal Women's Hospital, Carlton over four days, preceded by a half-day epidemiology and biostatistics workshop. For details, click here Workshops on the Design of Perinatal TrialsThese workshops are held periodically and cover aspects of trial design and management focusing on the planning and implementation aspects of trials, as well as other practical issues in conducting trials. For details, click here Journal club is held monthly, and provides an opportunity to review, critique and discuss two journal articles per month. These are structured to provide discussion about issues in design, conduct or analysis raised during the projects being undertaken by members of the participating research groups. Some topics canvassed recently have been: Meta-analysis, applying systematic review methods to studies of people's views, control of a large cohort data set like the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health; network surveys in the PRISM study; experience using CATI research. Enquiries: Regular advocacy workshops for staff and students continue to be an integral part of MCHR activities. These workshops provide a continuing opportunity to be informed of the broader social and political context of health policy and service developmentas well as developing the understanding and skills to draw out, where appropriate, the relevant policy and service implications of research findings.
