Three state-wide surveys of recent mothers conducted over the past decade in Victoria , Australia , have identified that women consistently rated the care they received in hospital less favourably than antenatal and intrapartum care. Little has been known however regarding caregivers' perspectives on the provision of hospital postnatal care. A state-wide review of hospital postnatal care (PinC) was conducted in 2004 to gain an in-depth undertanding of current organisational structures and processes in relation to hospital postnatal care in Victoria . Sixty-six of the eligible hospitals (66/69, 96%) responded to a postal survey and 38 interviews were conducted with key informants from 14 hospitals across Victoria . The findings indicate that there was great diversity in the provision of hospital postnatal care across Victoria with a number of barriers to care including the ‘busyness' of maternity units; lack of staff associated with ratios and/or recruitment/retention issues, and priority given to other episodes of care.
