Mike Moore was Director General of the World Trade Organisation from September 1999 until August 2002. Mike is widely credited with restoring confidence in the system following the setback of the 3rd WTO Ministerial held in Seattle in 1999.

While maintaining the organisation's focus on its core business of trade liberalisation, Mike gave particular attention to helping poor countries participate effectively in the multilateral trading system. He also introduced initiatives to enhance the WTO's image, articulated the case for free and fair trade in a wide range of media and deepened the organisation's relations with civil society.

Mike's distinguished political career spanned the years 1984 - 1999. During this time he held many portfolios including Overseas Trade and Marketing, Tourism , Sport and Recreation, Finance, Foreign Affairs and was Prime Minister of New Zealand in1990.

The recipient of numerous honours, Mike Moore was awarded New Zealand's highest honour, The Order of New Zealand in 1999.

Mike Moore is the author of a number of books. His latest book entitled 'A World Without Walls' is to be published by Cambridge University Press in early 2003. Mike Moore is also a member of the Privy Council.
