Single subject entry

Enrolling in single subjects (or ‘units’) is a great pathway to being accepted into a La Trobe course. While completion of single subjects doesn't guarantee admission into an undergraduate course – you will still be required to apply separately for an undergraduate degree – a strong performance can certainly help your application. You may also be eligible to receive credit (Advanced Standing) for the subject/s you successfully complete.

In addition to being an entry pathway, taking single subjects is a great way to find out whether a particular area of study is right for you; it can also boost your confidence for further uni studies. Even if you don’t plan on later enrolling in a course, single subject study is a great way to gain knowledge in a new discipline, or (if you are working) enhance your qualifications.

How do I apply?

Apply direct to the relevant faculty using the Single Unit Studies Application Form (PDF 262KB).

Faculties usually accept applications until late February for commencement in Semester 1 (March) and mid to late July for commencement in Semester 2 (late July).

Important things to note:

  • Not all subjects (units) are offered each year, and changes may occur to subjects, fees, assessment and admission requirements. The University may also set limits on the number of students in a subject.
  • Enrolment is conditional on the recommendation of the relevant Head of School (or nominee) and Faculty Office approval. Approvals are not automatic and each Faculty has the right to refuse admission to any applicant.
  • International students must meet appropriate study visa conditions.

How much do single subjects cost?

There’s a specified fee for each subject (unit). To find out the cost of the subjects that interest you, look up unit code in our fee calculator, or ask the relevant faculty. You may also need to buy textbooks/reading materials.

Can I just audit a subject?

Enrolling in a single subject means you’ll attend lectures and tutorials and submit work for assessment.

Alternatively, you can apply to be a non-assessed (audit unit) student. This means you can attend classes without completing assessment tasks; it’s a great option if you’re studying for personal interest and unlikely to apply to a degree program.

Different fees may apply – contact the relevant faculty for more information. Please note that some subjects, such as languages, are not available as audit units.
