With the approval of their home university, honours and coursework masters students may take courses for credit towards their degree. The summer school also encourages the participation of Phd and research masters students in the mathematical sciences who may which to broaden their mathematical foundations. The courses are also open to postgraduate students from cognate areas who wish to extend their knowledge of appropriate areas of mathematics and statistics. The AMSI Summer School's appeal has proven to be of interest to students from Physics, Engineering, Biomedical Science and Commerce (Finance, Risk Management and other quantitative areas), among others.

About the AMSI Summer School

Summer School 2010

La Trobe University is host to the eighth annual AMSI Summer School designed for mathematics and statistics Honours and Coursework Masters students. The four week program consists of courses in pure mathematicss and applied mathematics and statistics.

Students enjoy a stimulating atmosphere where opportunities for the interchange of ideas both with one another and with the lecturers exist. The feeling of camaraderie and the opportunity to share mathematical experiences with a larger group of students are key features of the Summer School. Social events such as morning teas and barbecues also contribute to the experience.

Background

The Australian Mathematics Sciences Institute (AMSI) is a national consortium established through a grant from the Victorian Government and funds from thirty-one AMSI member institutions. In 2002 the Federal Government announced funding which enabled AMSI to run a program of summer courses for honours and coursework masters students in the mathematical sciences. Previous summer schools have been held in at the University of Melbourne (2003), University of New South Wales (2004), Australian National University (2005), RMIT University (2006), University of Sydney (2007), Monash University (2008) and most recently at University of Wollongong.
