Statistics Section

Postgraduate Coursework

The 3 degrees described below are offered mainly by coursework. The Department also offers degrees that are awarded solely on the basis of a research thesis, see research degrees. Scholarships are available for research degrees, but not for coursework degrees.

  1. Graduate Diploma in Mathematical and Information Sciences
Individuals who have a degree in some other discipline, but now find that their employment requires knowledge of Statistics can enrol in this Diploma and satisfy the requirements with a combination of first, second and third year Statistics courses. The Diploma is normally taken part-time over two years.

  2. Postgraduate Diploma in Science (Statistics)
This Diploma is for graduates with a major in Statistics. It can be equivalent to STATISTICS 4, the Honours year. However, it is more flexible and can therefore accommodate individuals who do not have the exact entrance requirements for STATISTICS 4. The course consists of eight of the Key Centre for Statistical Science components, or the equivalent. These components are listed below; not all of them are available every year.

  3. Master of Statistical Science (MStatSci)
Entry to the MStatSci program can be with a standard 3-year degree, but is normally with an Honours degree, or equivalent. For the latter type of enrolment the program consists of four taught components (50%), training in statistical consulting work (25%) and a minor thesis (25%), which is normally of an applied nature. The coursework components are selected from the Key Centre components listed below. If entry to the program is with a standard 3-year degree, then the first year of the program is equivalent to the Postgraduate Diploma in Science (Statistics).
