Some Explorations in Mathematics

These presentations are prepared by members of the Department of Mathematics. None of them are very technical. We hope you enjoy them.

Geometry in Motion

Worth a Thousand pictures. A website which provides tutorials in Geometry. Produced by Dr John Banks and Dr Jeff Brooks.

John Banks' Chaos a Pictorial Introduction

Uses pictures and animations to illustrate some essential features of chaos theory and describes an interesting contribution to the theory by some members of La Trobe's Department of Mathematics.

Andrej Panjkov's Quicktime Animations of Surface Constructions

Were designed for students of our AM/CS/EN 201 courses but should intrigue anyone interested in mathematics.

Try the Ellipse Game

An interactive mathematical game, where you have to find the foci of an ellipse. Instructions (but no batteries??) are included.

John Banks' and Jeff Brooks' A Mathematical Approach to Slicing Doughnuts

Uses pictures and animations to illustrate some surprising facts about cross sections through a 'torus', the technical name for a doughnut shaped geometrical object.
