With an Applied Statistics Stream

Creating a wide variety of career opportunities

A three year degree specialising in mathematics and statistics. A fourth Honours year is also available.

  • Students take both mathematics and statistics at first year.
  • Students take second year statistics subjects in Modern Applied Statistics, Models for Data Analysis and Analysis Based on Linear Models. Students take third year statistics subjects in Analysis Based on Linear Models, Biostatistics, Statistical Inference and Applied Statistics.
  • Other subjects can be chosen from across the University, giving great flexibility.
  • Graduates are eligible to apply for accredited membership of the Australian Mathematical Society, the Statistical Society of Australia, or both. They may be eligible for further professional society membership (for example in the Australian Computer Society) if they take a major study in another discipline alongside their mathematics/statistics specialisation.
Be a professional Statistician

Statisticians are widely employed by Government and industry in areas such as

  • computing
  • financial analysis
  • meteorology
  • environmental modelling
  • insurance
  • biostatistics
  • teaching
  • sample surveys
  • statistical genetics

Many employers take on statistical graduates as specialists to service larger groups such as engineers, market analysts, health professionals or general scientists.

Employers find statistical graduates particularly attractive because of their extensive analytical, numerical and computer skills.

Strengths of the Program
  • State of the Art: you will learn the latest computing tools used by professional statisticians.
  • Flexibility: you can choose any other subjects from across the University (subject to prerequisites and quotas) alongside your statistics subjects.
  • Proven teaching: La Trobe’s Departments of Mathematics and Statistical Science has established a unique approach to its teaching, based on active problem solving sessions.
  • Career focus: you can choose combinations of subjects specifically tailored to help you get the statistics job you want.
  • The balance of applied statistics and statistical theory prepares students for a range of careers in the statistical sciences.
What the Employers say
  • "Students who have included mathematics or statistics in their qualification are preferred for our Audit department and other specialist areas". (National Australia Bank)
  • "Our recruitment requirements are usually maths/stats with a credit average". (Australian Bureau of Statistics)
  • "Two of our Business Units, Commonwealth Financial Services and Group Finance and Accounting, are interested in recruiting graduates with mathematics and statistics studies". (Commonwealth Bank)
  • "Statistics is becoming more important due to our company’s push towards Quality Management in which the collection and analysis of performance data is important". (Minenco)
Entry requirements for the BMathStatSc

The prerequisite is a study score of 20 in English and either a study score of 25 in Mathematical Methods or a study score of 20 in Specialist Mathematics.
