Research Group on General Algebra and its Applications

The Research Group on General Algebra and its Applications is one of the most active and well-established research groups in the Mathematics Section at La Trobe University. Its members include academic staff, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, honours students and visitors.

The group's research centres on general algebra (also known as universal algebra), the theory of natural dualities, semigroup theory, lattice theory and related areas.

The research group has attracted talented young mathematicians who have won La Trobe University Post-Doctoral Fellowships (Dr M. Haviar, Dr J. Tuma and Dr J. East) and three-year ARC Post-Doctoral Fellowships (Dr M. Jackson and Dr J. Pitkethly). The group also attracts leading international researchers for stays of between one and two months.

The group meets at a weekly seminar throughout the academic year.

Last year, the group organised the 25th Victorian Algebra Conference.

General Algebra Seminar

The General Algebra Seminar is held every week throughout the academic year. Each year has a theme. From year to year, the themes alternate between areas of current research activity and areas outside our research that are of interest to the group.

The seminar for 2008 will focus on Constraint Satisfaction Problems. It will be held at 11am on every Tuesday and some Fridays, in the Access Grid Room, PS2.

The topics over previous years have been:

  • 2007: Current Research
  • 2006: Semigroups and Related Algebras
  • 2005: Finitely Based Quasi-Varieties
  • 2004: Undecidable Properties of Finite Algebras
  • 2003: Full versus Strong Dualities and Standard Topological Quasi-varieties
  • 2002: Combinatorics on Words
  • 2001: Dualisability in General and of Semigroups in Particular
  • 2000: Coalgebras
