Postgraduate studies in Mathematics and Statistics

The two degrees described below are offered by coursework. The Department also offers degrees awarded solely on the basis of a research thesis. Scholarships are available for research degrees, but not for coursework degrees.

Postgraduate Diploma in Science (Mathematics, Statistics or Mathematics and Statistics)

This Diploma is for graduates with a major in Mathematics or Statistics. It is equivalent to an Honours year in Mathematics or Statistics or Mathematics and Statistics. However, it is more flexible and can therefore accommodate individuals who do not have the exact entrance requirements for Honours in one of these fields.

Master of Statistical Science (MStatSci)

Entry to the MStatSci program can be with a standard 3-year bachelor degree with a major in statistics, but is normally with an Honours degree, or equivalent. For the latter type of enrolment the program consists of four taught components (50%), training in statistical consulting work (12.5%) and a minor thesis (37.5%), which is normally of an applied nature. The coursework components are selected from the Key Centre for Statistical Sciences (KCSS), Access Grid Room (AGR) and Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) Summer School subjects. If entry to the program is with a standard 3-year degree, then the first year of the program is equivalent to the Postgraduate Diploma in Science (Statistics).

Application for Candidature
