La Trobe University
Department of Mathematics and Statistics

About us

We have a reputation as one of Australia's most progressive teaching departments in the Mathematical adn Statistical Sciences, a place where students actively learn Mathematics and Statistics in an informal environment. This has been matched by excellent  responses in the national Course Experience Questionnaires administered by Graduate Careers Council of Australia over many years.  For example, in the past three years, La Trobe Mathematics and Statistics degrees have ranked in the top 3 Australia wide on both the Good Teaching Scale and Overall Satisfaction items, including an unrivalled 3 first or equal-first placings, and missing the top placing just once amongst universities in Victoria.

Why are La Trobe Maths & Stats graduates so happy? Because to engage with our broad intake of students, we really emphasise student participation in the learning process, with fewer lectures and more tutorial classes.  The focus is on doing, rather than listening.  We also  tailor-make our own teaching materials including subject texts, which saves students money and which are completely adapted to our teaching style, unlike traditional textbooks.

If you want to learn mathematics and statistics, come to the best university teachers in Australia!

Our research department is also very active, recognised by the University as an area of research strength, and with many international and national connections. Our current research interests can be found in our research page. We have an active postdoctoral program supporting our research through national and international competitive grants. Our current and recent postgraduate students come from Australia, Mexico, New Zealand, Vietnam, Indonesia and China. They enjoy first class supervision in a friendly, well-resourced environment and many learn to teach mathematics and statistics as tutors in our nationally recognised undergraduate program. Our PhD graduates go on to successful careers as academics, educationalists, bankers and financiers.  If you are interested in postgraduate study in Maths or Stats you've come to the right place!
