The G. S. Watson Annual Lecture, 2002

Professor Lynn Batten
Title: "Tales of Decrypt"
Presenter: Professor Lynn Batten, School of Computing and Mathematics, Deakin University, Melbourne
Date: Thursday, 29 August 2002, 5pm to 6pm, Education Lecture Theatre, La Trobe University, Bendigo
Abstract: The topic of the 2002 G. S. Watson Annual Lecture, to be presented by Professor Lynn Batten, is encryption. Encryption and decryption techniques have been used for centuries to disguise information being passed between several parties. Initially, these techniques were based on simple mathematics. But as methods of decrypting information were made more formal and rigorous, more sophisticated encryption techniques had to be developed. Professor Batten will examine some of the highlights in the history of cryptography, where dramatic breakthroughs in decryption techniques have forced changes in encryption strategies.
About the Presenter: Lynn Batten is Professor of Mathematics in the School of Computing and Mathematics at Deakin University's Rusden campus. Her research interests, which include information security and reliability, cryptology, coding theory and optimization techniques, have important applications to the operation and security of modern-day computer networks. Before taking up her appointment at Deakin University at the start of 2000, Lynn held positions at the Universities of Winnipeg and Manitoba in Canada. As the Associate Dean for Academic and Industrial Research at the University of Manitoba, she established a number of agreements between the University and various industry and government sectors. Lynn has written over 50 papers and books, held visiting positions at universities in several countries, and her research work has attracted funding from a wide range of public and industry sources.
