Title: "Developing young children as mathematical thinkers in P-4: Exciting approaches from the Early Numeracy Research Project"

Presenter: Associate Professor Doug Clarke, Director, Mathematics Teaching and Learning Centre, Australian Catholic University

Date: Monday, 10 September 2001, 4.30pm to 5.30pm, McKay Lecture Theatre, La Trobe University, Bendigo

Abstract: In the 2001 G. S. Watson Annual Lecture, Associate Professor Doug Clarke will share experiences from the Early Numeracy Research Project. This project, involving 70 Victorian primary schools (including six in the Bendigo regional area), is exploring the most effective approaches to teaching mathematics in the early years of school. Doug will talk about:

  • Key stages in young children's maths learning,
  • The one-to-one assessment interview that has now been used with over 11,000 children around the state,
  • Some of the exciting classroom activities that project teachers have been using with great effect,
  • The calculator: a blessing or a curse or a bit of both?
  • The everyday kinds of family activities that parents can use to support the maths learning of their children.

And we'll have some fun too!

About the Presenter: Doug Clarke is an Associate Professor at the Australian Catholic University (Victoria). He was formerly joint coordinator of the Australian Mathematics Curriculum and Teaching Program (MCTP: Prep-10). In recent years, his interests have included using mathematics to explore current events and students' interests, problem solving and investigations, building number sense, and manageable and meaningful assessment. Doug is Director of the Early Numeracy Research Project, involving a total of 35 Department, Catholic and Independent primary schools. Doug enjoys working in classrooms with teachers and students to make mathematics relevant and enjoyable.
