Communication skills resource 2: Analysing student skills

Analysing student's communication skills: Goals and capabilities [PDF 262KB]

Developing students' communication skills is a shared responsibility. In order to provide appropriate opportunities for communication skills support and development to students, you need to be able to identify what skills students should have at their year level and beyond (goals), and what they do have (capabilities). Identifying communication skills goals and capabilities and communicating these to students also raises students' own awareness of their skills levels and gives them incentive to improve.

The above resource contains materials to help you use the knowledge you already have to:

  • Clarify what the expected standard of writing is. This gives you a reference point for what you should expect at each year level.
  • Become more aware of the features of student writing which you can focus on when marking students' work so they can act on your feedback.
