Melbourne is officially Australia's music capital! (Issue 21, 2011)
A new report by Deloitte Access Economics and the recent announcements of Melbourne hosting some of Australia’s biggest public and industry events confirm what Melbourne residents already know – we are mad for live music!
Commissioned by Arts Victoria, the report examines the live music scene in Victoria's pubs, bars, nightclubs, cafes and restaurants and its contribution to the state’s economy, social well-being and cultural vitality. One of its most significant findings is that Melbourne has more music venues than any other Australian city – collectively presenting an average of 3000 live performances each week. This confirms the city’s status as one of the world’s major music hubs and its growing reputation as one of the best venues in the southern hemisphere – giving you more reason to choose Melbourne when looking for somewhere to live and study!
Running 18-26 November 2011, Melbourne Music Week (MMW) is the perfect time for music-lovers to experience the city’s thriving independent music scene. It will also see the city become a focus for the national and international music industry with a series of major events timed to coincide with public festivities.
An initiative of the City of Melbourne, in partnership with the local music industry (venues, independent labels and promoters), MMW is one of Melbourne’s biggest music events with a huge program of live performances, DJ sets, films, workshops and conferences planned. The event will feature over 130 acts performing at 40 different locations. The locations will include less traditional sites such as St Michael’s church and the rooftop of Melbourne Central Shopping Complex.
While there will be plenty of action to attract the casual visitor, major industry events such as the Face the Music conference, the Australasian World Music Expo and the EG Awards are expected to bring many key representatives from the local, interstate and international music scenes to Melbourne.
