Is Melbourne the right city for you? (Issue 4, 2013)
The city you will live and study in is one of the most important factors to consider when deciding on a university. So is Melbourne the right place for you? Here is a list to consider.
- Culture: Melbourne is one of the most diverse and multicultural cities in the world, so no matter where you are from, you will always be able to find a piece of home. Melbourne is well known for its love of arts, food, sport and recreation – and this is reflected in its reputation as Australia’s ‘cultural and sporting capital’.
- Climate: In Melbourne we are lucky enough to have fairly mild weather, both in winter and summer. Our average temperature in summer is 26 degrees Celsius and 13 degrees Celsius in winter. Melbourne is famous for having ‘four seasons in one day’, so preparing for anything is a must when getting ready for the day.
- Entertainment: What are you going to do when you’re not at uni or studying? Melbourne has something for everyone; from festivals and concerts to theatre and dining there is always something happening in Melbourne. Have a look at this entertainment guide to see what’s on at the moment.
- Safety: While Melbourne is relatively safe, it’s always best to use common-sense with personal safety. Think Before is a new international student safety initiative, there are also other online resources including Victoria Police and Safety Victoria. La Trobe University also gives advice on living safely in Victoria, including while you’re on campus and when you go out.
