Five La Trobe students have been announced as the winners of the Australian round of the CFA Investment Research Challenge.

Mr Tong Wang, Mr Jin Kang, Miss Jennifer Hua, Miss Ahn Le and Mr Hani Koshaji will represent Australia at the Asian final of the Challenge in Bali in February next year. If successful, they will be competing in the Challenge final, to be held in the United States in April.

‘This was the best experience of my life so far. It gave me confidence that I can work in the real world and use my knowledge for the benefit of investors. I found my best friends during this period,’ says one of the winning students, Tong Wang.

All five winners are international students coming from Syria, China, Korea and Vietnam, two of them undergraduates enrolled in the Bachelor of Finance and the other three Master of Financial Analysis students.

‘For me, the most valuable thing I learned through participating in the Challenge was the importance of team work. The harmony and support from each team member took us through to the next level of this achievement, explains Mr Byoung Jin Kang.

The team was prepared by Mr Greg Jamieson, Senior Lecturer in Finance at La Trobe’s School of Economics and Finance.

The CFA Institute Global Investment Research Challenge gathers students, investment industry professionals, and corporate sponsors together locally, regionally and globally for a real world competition. Student teams from the top local business schools write an equity research report on an assigned company and present their findings to a panel of investment industry experts.

2009 was the first year when Melbourne universities had the opportunity to compete in the challenge and
La Trobe came a very close second after Monash in the Australian competition.
