Dr David Bradley
Tenured Reader and Associate Professor in Linguistics.
Linguistic and areal interests include
- Sociohistorical linguistics,
- phonology and phonetics,
- language policy and language maintenance,
- language endangerment
- East, Southeast and South Asian languages, especially those of the Sino-Tibetan group and minorities
- Knowledge of English, Burmese, Thai, Chinese, French, Italian and a variety of Asian minority languages including Lahu, Gong, Lisu.
- many years of field experience in Thailand, Burma, Laos, China, India and Nepal
Teaching since 1975 in Linguistics and Asian languages and studies
Substantial external funding received.
Extensive contacts with Asian universities over more than 25 years; participated in establishing, obtaining funding for, and running exchange links in China, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia and India. Many years of fieldwork experience in China, Southeast and South Asia.
Administrative Responsibilities
Extensive university administrative experience in linguistics and language studies. Established and led the development of La Trobe University's Asian Languages program (Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, Hindi, Burmese).
Program Seminar Co-ordinator
Dr Bradley has conducted extensive research on endangered languages, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, geolinguistics, language policy and phonetics/phonology in Southeast, East and South Asia over many years, especially on Tibeto-Burman languages.
